“Women and children first” is a protocol used in marine disasters, most famously during the sinking RMS Titanic. The desperate saying suggests that men have a better chance of surviving a coming catastrophe than women. It is no coincidence that Shaun Richards chose this motto as the title for his painting exhibition which opened at Flanders Gallery in 2009.
